Hello SAASerxs! Happy Winter!
Can you believe it’s been 6 years since SAAS came into the scene? It’s been a wonderful journey for us and the holidays have us reflecting on the possibilities brought to life with your support. Please consider joining our efforts for more active streets by donating to inaugural Giving Tuesday fundraising.
Since forming as a coalition, we’ve collaborated with numerous partners to push for safer streets for all those who walk, roll, ride, skate and scoot around the city. You may have seen us around Santa Ana giving out thousands of helmets & safety lights to residents, teaching hundreds of students to ride their bicycles more confidently on the road, as well as providing space for hundreds of children and teenagers to explore safe habits to navigate their community streets. We have worked to gain a voice in city planning and this has led to our coalition partners becoming leaders in developing city active transportation plans, documents that will guide the city toward a more walkable and bikeable future.
However, we also don’t see our work just in giving out helmets or advocating for more bike lanes. As we seek to make improvements to our city, we want to make sure our residents are able to remain in place and enjoy the new amenities that seek to make the city safer. That’s why we continue to support & leverage partnerships like Equity for All’s Community Lands in Community Hands campaigns to ensure we are fighting for better living conditions in our community while integrating local solutions from residents working for their right to ‘endure and thrive’ in our city.
While six years seems like a long time, we still have a lot to accomplish. This upcoming year we’ll be hiring two staff members to lead our revamped bicycle & pedestrian safety program that we’ll be rolling in the near future. In addition to our bike helmet/lights giveaways, bike classes, and safety demonstrations, we’ll also be leading bike/pedestrian 101 safety courses where we’ll be sharing some best practices around the world about how cities are developed. We’ll also be recruiting residents to develop a pop-up demonstration to make a dream project in the city a temporary reality. As usual, we’ll continue to host our bike rides, walks and all the fun activities you’ve come to know and love.
We started years ago as an effort by residents to make our streets safer for people who get around using their walking feet, bici pedals, or other wheels. We’re still here & we’re not slowing down; consider joining us as we make our way to 10 years, with your financial support we’ll make it there with great success. Thank you for your support and happy holidays.
